Arian Çani When Majko announced his candidacy for the post of party leader two days ago, he implied that he had done so because he was compelled by the actions and the fierce campaign launched by his rival, Fatos Nano. Last night, everyone spoke of a compromise reached between the Prime Minister and his deputy, Ilir Meta. Put more simply, in what would be a first, Meta would give Majko his votes. But this remains only at the level of speculation, since Ilir Meta himself has yet to come forward—and for the third day in a row—to declare his support for candidate Majko. His theoretical opponent Majko is heading toward the Congress without even being quite sure himself whether he will also be able to get the votes of FRESH, that is, Meta's. Because Meta continues to remain silent, and this missing act could suddenly leave Majko with a bitter taste at the last moment. The Prime Minister began furiously attacking the former party leader, reminding him of September 14 and Crete. Nano accused the latter of having collaborated with Berisha to topple him from the Prime Minister's chair. In this story of electoral statements and mutual accusations within the party, the only one still shrouded in mystery and uncertainty is Ilir Meta. such votes, at the level of hypotheses, since Ilir Meta himself has still not come forward—for candidate Majko. Theoretically, and especially in the Socialist Party, where there are very few inhibitions, the campaign obliges you to state openly that you support this or that candidate. That is why, even late last night, in the corridors of the Government and the SP, many thought—and some were convinced—that Meta would withdraw at the last moment. And this time not from the race for the party chairman’s post, but from supporting Majko. Thus, while the electoral contest in the camp of those who currently lead the executive still seems unclear and murky, Nano continues to “build his wall” with an intensive campaign across Albania. From Fier to Burrel, Bulqizë and Peshkopi, Fatos Nano is building this wall without making much effort to seek alliances and compromises. Meanwhile, those who had worked together at the door were there to topple him from the seat of Prime Minister. In this story of campaign declarations shrouded in mystery and uncertainty is Ilir Meta. The strategy of Majko’s deputy appears carefully thought out, and it is very likely that Meta will play a double game, giving the two rivals the impression—but not his word—that they can hope for his support at the last moment, that is, in the Congress hall. In the Socialist Party, Ilir Meta is regarded as one of the leaders with considerable support, and not only among the members of his FRESH. Nano and Majko know this very well, and they would certainly not say NO to votes they might gain through him. But it is quite possible that Meta, with many years of experience in the Socialist Party, will no longer work in favor of one candidate or the other. A few days ago, FRESH asked Meta to run. Meta did not say YES, but Meta did not say NO either. Meta has not sold his shares yet.
