EDITORIAL . Meta must not back down. The constant din of Albanian politics was drowned out three days ago, when Prime Minister Meta called for the expulsion of the companies building roads. His tone was clear and firm. It left no room for any equivocation. The result was immediate. The foreign companies seem to have understood that this was not a show. They immediately began working at full capacity on all sections of the national roads for which they had signed contracts. For nearly ten years, Albania has become a “treasure island” for the plundering of public funds. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent without interruption. But they have disappeared into the potholes in the roads, which keep multiplying, as well as into the pockets of local officials and international fraudsters. Yet for ten years, Albanian political opinion has been caught up in folkloric debates, in which every quip by Berisha against Nano, and vice versa, is recounted like the exploits of Muji and Halili. Meanwhile, the situation remains just as it was. In winter, darkness descends on the cities; in summer, they are scorched by water shortages. The roads, with their potholes and dust, continue to drive investors away... Continued on page 3
