The deeply dramatic situation in which Albania found itself in the days leading up to the proclamation of National Independence is also reflected in the telegraphic conversation that took place on 25 November 1912 between Aziz Vrioni, prefect of Berat, and Aqif Biçaku, prefect of Elbasan, a conversation that has survived and been recorded to this day.
The two high-ranking figures were speaking at the same moment in the telegraph offices of their cities. Aziz Vrioni (Berat): “Here we are in panic and in great distress”. Aqif Biçaku (Elbasan): “Our situation has also worsened. Ohrid and Struga have fallen (into the hands of the Serbian army - K.F.)
