Based on the preliminary data of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, published yesterday by the Institute of Statistics, Albania’s population is currently 2,831,741 inhabitants. It is noted that the population in 2011 has decreased by 7.7% over these ten years. Meanwhile, the population from the 2001 census was 3,069,275. According to the Institute, the main causes of the population decline are presumed to be large-scale emigration and falling birth rates. Another very significant piece of data, which together with the population figure has been commented on by political and social actors in the country, concerns the fact that for the first time in Albania the majority of the population is settled in cities, no longer in villages. “For the first time in the history of censuses carried out in Albania, the population living in urban areas is larger than that in rural areas.
