The Minister of the Interior, Saimir Tahiri, stated yesterday before the deputies of the Parliamentary Committee on Laws that under the new law “On the use of weapons”, the State Police has the right to shoot at minors, women and elderly people if they pose a threat to the life of a police officer or of any citizen. On the other hand, Tahiri clarifies, under the new law, the police are prohibited from using weapons against protesters, even as a warning, a consequence of the events of 21 January.
“The old law stipulated that a weapon could not be used against minors, against women and the elderly, whereas with the new law this criterion also falls, since these categories can also pose a potential, imminent, real danger to the life of the police officer or of any citizen. This means that under the new law, the weapon must be used against anyone who puts at risk the life of any citizen or the life of the police officer.
