THE MINISTER MAKES THE APPOINTMENTS Debates in the Law Committee, Doshi: As was done in Berisha’s time with people from Tropojë, now it is being done with people from Tepelenë. People were taken off the street and put in charge Socialist Party deputy Tom Doshi harshly criticized Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri yesterday over what he said were political appointments in the State Police. Doshi accused Tahiri of appointing only people from Tepelenë as blue-uniformed leaders, comparing him to Berisha who, according to him, appointed only people from Tropojë. The socialist deputy expressed these views at the meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, where the draft law “On the State Police” was being discussed. “It is said that the State Police is independent, but I say that the State Police is political. The minister makes the appointments. The minister makes the appointments and the facts show that all the leaders in the police today are from Tepelenë. Northerners do not exist in the State Police. So all these proposals with appointments he makes are all political. If it comes to that, the Minister of Public Order is a political post. The powers belong to the Director General. Then, for me, the Director General has no powers. Even for a sergeant he has to ask the minister for permission... On pages 6-7
