This is the conclusion reached by the three experts appointed by the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office, who carried out a new inventory in the Issue Department, following strong suspicions held by the prosecution authority that more money might have been stolen than the amount declared by the Bank of Albania itself, a few days after the scandal was made public on 21 July 2014. In fact, it was Ardian Bitraj himself, the former head of the Stock Vault and the man who single-handedly took responsibility for the huge theft at the Treasury, who, at the time of his self-reporting, stated that the amount of money he had stolen was a little over 700 million lek, of which 600 million were new banknotes expected to be put into circulation, while nearly 120 million were banknotes removed from circulation and awaiting destruction.
