The amount stolen from the country’s most important financial institution, by the two former employees Ardian Bitraj and Mimoza Bruzia, is estimated at around 600 million lek, or about 4.2 million euro. The suspects Bitraj and Bruzia appeared yesterday before the Tirana court; against them, the security measure of “arrest in prison” was imposed during a session held in complete secrecy. The theft scandal was uncovered precisely at the time when the money that had been withdrawn from circulation, or that was ready to be put into circulation, was to be destroyed. A commission set up by the bank, which was to verify the amount of cash in stock, was shocked to learn that millions of lek were missing from the vault, from the very head of the Stock Cash sector, Ardian Bitraj, who admitted that it was indeed he who had taken the money.
