COUNTERFEIT 500-LEKË BANKNOTES SEIZED

Following the decision to withdraw the 25-lekë banknote from circulation in September next year, it seems that Albanian citizens will also be wary of and look at the other banknote denominations with suspicion. Thus, four days ago, a state of alarm arose at the Albanian State Bank when counterfeit new 500-lekë banknotes were discovered. Despite the immediate response by the anti-counterfeiting employees, it is still unclear how many counterfeit notes of this denomination there are and where they were produced. The original 500-lekë banknote was printed in 1991 at the banknote printing house in Albania and, as has been acknowledged, this denomination proved to be very poor.
