More than 2,000 citizens stopped by police from entering the cemetery

On the morning of 29 November, large numbers of police blocked Flag Square and all the entrances to the Martyrs’ Cemetery. At 9:00, a large number of people, around 2,000, gathered in the square. They were veterans of the National Liberation War, relatives of the families of the martyrs, and various citizens who wished to go to the cemetery to pay tribute at the martyrs’ graves. But this time it was impossible. The authorities have decided that 29 November should be forgotten, and the police are determined to enforce this. For the first time in nearly 50 years, they were stopped by force. The authorities held the official commemorations on the 28th, which were all approved in Parliament. Some are obliged to act this way. Ordinary people are not obliged to observe that date. Visits to the cemetery of the martyrs—those who gave their lives, the finest sons and daughters of this country—will take place whenever the white-haired veterans and black-headscarved mothers wish, whether on 29 November or 29 December.

A girl wants to marry her father’s killer

What a force love has, what a consuming fire is hidden in this mad passion, what a feeling and strength can defy even the gravest spiritual catastrophes—this extraordinary case shows. Mira Devolli, 19, from the village of Ponçarë in the Devoll district, in a statement addressed to the judicial authorities some time ago, requested the release of Xhili Hoxha, 22, sentenced a week earlier on the charge of “the crime of murder committed in circumstances of necessary self-defence.” Demir Demolli, the father of M.D., was killed because of his daughter, during a scene of violence, with a stone to the head. Yet, despite the interruption of their “Love Story” in such a tragic way, she had become pregnant. That was the reason she went to the house of her father’s killer. At least, that was what people said several months ago; but now, after enough time has passed to make that rumour seem unbelievable, it turns out that the real reason for the marriage in absentia is precisely the magical feeling of love.
