It was precisely Argentina’s defeat that, more than anything else, brought misfortune upon a bettor, forcing him—though not without pain—to give up what was perhaps most precious to him after his passion for betting: his wife. E.Gj., 37, a resident of neighborhood 7, was the one who took a fellow bettor’s wife; for formal reasons, we are not mentioning his name. Since the latter had no money, he was perhaps absolutely certain that Argentina would beat Bulgaria and was therefore forced to use his wife as a stake in case he lost the bet. And the “miracle” happened. Argentina loses the match, citizen E.Gj. wins the wife and is more eager than ever to enjoy the happy days granted to him by the Bulgarian team. Later, the loser of the bet, perhaps now having come to his senses, reported the matter to the police, but the authorities cannot return to him, at least forever, the “stolen treasure.” Z.D.
