It has now been proven that whenever the climate in Albanian-Greek relations becomes strained, the storm always falls on Albanian emigrants. Athens apparently has both the stone and the weapon in its hands. Hundreds of undocumented refugees can be seen being forcibly returned from seasonal jobs in Greece, and among those returning are some who get off police buses. One of the fiercest revenge hunts. On Friday alone, 300 refugees arrived, among them several who had been physically mistreated. Some were truly bloodied in the face, and others had been brutally beaten, but many people were telling their stories, a taxi driver testifies, when an emigrant was brought in on a stretcher as a result. The unfortunate man was kept temporarily at Korçë Hospital, where he received emergency medical care, and was discharged because no surgeon was available to perform the operation. The person was not identified by name, but according to statements by the emergency doctor, he was a young man from Dibra who had suffered a spinal injury. Likewise, 30-year-olds Ilirjan Zito and Sami Bode from the village of Koritë in the Korçë district presented themselves at Bilisht Hospital; they too had sustained head injuries from blows. These are the most evident cases in recent days, while mass returns have continued since the early hours of Saturday morning. Many of those preparing to emigrate were turned back at the Albanian border. In addition, travel using visas has been completely halted. According to the accounts of the expelled emigrants, the situation is also grim for thousands of others in Greek territory, but the merciless hunt may only just be beginning.
