The ordeal of the arrest of Kurt Kola, chairman of the Association of Political Prisoners, has ended after three months. Mr Kola himself confirmed the news in a telephone conversation yesterday evening, and also ended his five-day hunger strike, whose aim was to secure his swiftest possible appearance before the courts. Detained during the violent dispersal of the hunger strike he was leading, the release of the chairman of the former prisoners is owed to the repeated protests of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, the Association of Professional Journalists, as well as many local branches of the Association of Former Prisoners. But Kola’s return to freedom is also owed to the “No” that 53% of Albanians said to the draft constitution. According to President Berisha’s statement, one of the factors in the referendum’s defeat was also the loss of the right-wing electorate, among whose symbols Kurt Kola remains one. As of yesterday evening, Kola is free. He told “Koha Jonë” that starting today he will continue his work on the leadership of the Association of Prisoners, while also making it clear that someone must answer for the three months during which he was deprived of his right to freedom.
