Soon in Greece The idea of creating a Greek border police force was put forward last November by the Minister of Public Order, Steli Papathemelio, and the draft law, prepared four months ago, will soon be submitted to parliament for approval. The border police, whose official name is the Border Guard Corps (TRK), will be stationed near the Greek-Albanian border, and its task will be to apprehend and return to their homeland illegal migrants from Albania. The TRK’s budget will also be supplemented by European Union funds, since the Greek-Albanian border has also been designated a state border of the Community. The Corps will consist mainly of Greeks repatriated from the former Soviet Union, and the guards will receive unusual privileges: free housing, agricultural property, free services and state services. Their service term will be five years and may be renewed continually until the age of 60. As jointly decided a few days ago by the Ministry of Public Order and the Ministry of Defence, the Corps’ head will be a special secretary of the Ministry of Public Order, while its commander will be one of the senior police officers. Overall responsibility for the issue of illegal migration will lie with a special government committee comprising representatives of the ministries of Public Order, Defence, Foreign Affairs, Finance and Health, as well as the Merchant Marine. The draft law also provides for the construction of a center to temporarily accommodate illegal migrants while they await repatriation. The Corps will begin operating in 1995, and the first guards will be appointed during that year. ROBERT GORO
