— Chants of “We want electricity” outside the home of the Mayor, S.Kelmendi Tirana Last night, at around 5:30 p.m., residents of Myslym Shyri Street (in the centre of the capital) gathered to protest the continuing lack of electricity, which had been completely cut off for the last four days in particular. The gathering took place in the courtyard of apartment building no. 55, which is also the entrance to the building where Mayor Sali Kelmendi lives (he was not at home at that hour). The residents, especially the women and children, protested with the chant “We want light, we want light.” No more than 7–8 minutes later, three vans filled with police officers arrived. During that time there were no incidents, and both the residents and the police officers were observed to behave properly. Although angered and distressed by the extremely difficult situation caused by the complete lack of electricity, the residents were asking for nothing more than a decision to supply them with electricity on a reduced schedule. “We are angry,” they said, “because we cannot look after the elderly and the children, let alone think about cooking or washing.” If this situation continues tomorrow as well, we will protest again. Groups of young people refused to leave, and responded to the police officers’ request by saying, “We are very calm, but we prefer to stay outside rather than inside.” The residents left, hoping that perhaps the situation would improve the following day.
