Ruli, Uka, Hoxha and Bitincka under investigation
The Prosecutor General’s Office has requested the opening of criminal proceedings against four former ministers.
Fatos Bitincka and Albert Gajo, an adviser to Meksi, are accused of falsifying official documents, while Rexhep Uka, Genc Ruli and Arfan Hoxha are accused of selling a quantity of drugs in Italy. This is the first time that the justice authorities have requested the start of investigations into former ministers of the Democratic Party. Ruli and Uka are protected by their parliamentary mandates and, under the laws in force, investigations against them cannot begin without Parliament’s approval. Before Ruli and Uka, the DP stripped MPs Azem Hajdari and Arben Lika of their immunity. The former warned yesterday in Parliament of the beginning of a witch hunt, while the latter has been in prison for four months. Yesterday Parliament decided that consideration of the removal of Ruli and Uka’s mandates would take place after New Year. These moves within the DP camp are certainly connected to the events that unfolded after the referendum. So far, Berisha, the “strategist” behind the changes, has carried out a government reshuffle and begun taking control of the DP, which seems to be slipping from his grasp. The requests to strip the two MPs of their immunity are also being made more for the sake of political struggle than for the sake of fighting corruption. As with the dissenters Pashko, Zogaj, Ceka, Imami, etc., Berisha will settle accounts with some people in the DP himself. But while the dissenters left the DP’s ranks, many others are still there. And for the moment, these are more dangerous.
