Nano should not be tried by the Plenum
The Prosecutor General submits a request to the Court of Cassation
Yesterday a government meeting - another lawsuit against Brozi, not the Plenum of the Court of Cassation
Brozi: “The trial of Fatos Nano will continue”
An immediate turn in the Nano case. Yesterday the Prosecutor of the Republic, Mr. Alush Dragoshi, through a preliminary request addressed to the Cassation, tried to argue that the file of the socialist leader should no longer be tried by the Plenum of this Court. Only a short time after Dragoshi’s letter arrived, yesterday at midday, a written response signed by Chairman Brozi countered that the socialist leader would be tried. The Plenum, meeting yesterday and having also been informed of Dragoshi’s request, decided not only to try Nano but also to set the time and date for it. However, nothing is certain. The “Nano” case found itself between two fires. Also yesterday, the notice of Brozi’s trial in the Constitutional Court arrived, following the Government’s lawsuit against him. The Chairman of the Cassation will be tried before Fatos Nano.

Nano will be tried on 20 September
The hearing date for the Nano case is postponed in the Plenum of the Court of Cassation
Yesterday was an extremely busy working day for all the members of the Plenum of the Court of Cassation, and especially for its chairman, Mr. Brozi. Since last Friday he had decided to bring together all the members of the Plenum after the meeting they had held without his presence, in which they had decided not to hold the trial on the 12th but on the 20th instead. The decision they made without his participation had been deemed invalid by the head of the Cassation.
After talking yesterday at midday for about two hours with the members of the Plenum and hearing their arguments, he too became convinced and joined them. Together they decided to meet to try the chairman of the Socialist Party at 10:00 on 20 September.
The emergence of some new circumstances in setting the hearing date for the Fatos Nano case for 12.09.1995 was the subject of a meeting with all the judges of the Cassation yesterday at midday, chaired by Mr. Brozi. After everyone had expressed their views, the arguments were distilled into five points, all of which led to the conclusion that the hearing for Nano should be postponed. “The Court of Cassation, the first point of the statement concluding the meeting says, has since 06.09.1995 been surrounded by numerous police, military and civilian forces and SHIK personnel. This is military pressure on the staff of the Court of Cassation. Under these conditions the judges cannot rule normally, therefore we request that the court’s cordon be removed immediately.” One of the reasons that forced the members of the Cassation Plenum to postpone the trial date was also the discovery of a fact previously unknown. The Prosecutor General had left days earlier for England, where he would remain until 17.09.1995. His participation in the Plenum is a necessary requirement of the law. It was also learned that he had not delegated any other prosecutor to handle this case. Four days earlier, one of the members of the Plenum and at the same time the deputy chairman of the Court of Cassation, Mr. Agim Shkupi, had also left for Strasbourg. Before leaving, he asked that the hearing date be postponed so that his presence at the trial could also be ensured. In the same meeting the judges were also informed of the Prosecutor General’s request that the Nano case not be tried in the Plenum. But this was not accepted by the members of the Plenum.
Taking these conditions into account, the entire group of 10 judges led by Brozi agreed that the hearing of the Nano case would continue on 20.09.1995 at 10:00.

Boat capsizes, three Albanians die
The number of missing persons is still unknown
ROME - At least three Albanians trying to enter Italy died and more than 19 others are missing after their vessel caught fire and sank in the waters east of the port of Otranto on Monday, coast guard officials said. “Sixteen people were rescued, many of them from a US Navy ship that was in the area. All of them are suffering from burns because the boat caught fire,” said an official at the Bari maritime rescue center. “We believe there were between 30 and 45 people on the boat,” he said. Details are scarce because the rescue services had difficulty communicating with the Albanians.

Kosovo, the first word Berisha heard in Washington
“Autonomy for Kosovo” was the first sentence Berisha heard in Washington at the start of the most important visit of his career, which, unlike what might have been foreseen in Tirana, did not begin with noise, flags or ceremonial استقبال? No.

Improving weather increases the number of clandestine migrants
BARI - The flow of emigrants to the shores of Puglia, which had been slowed by bad weather during the previous week, resumed massively. During the night, soldiers from the Pinerolo brigade captured 60 foreign refugees on the Salento coast, including 24 Kurds, 15 Pakistanis, 7 Albanians and one Indian, all of whom were trying to enter Italy illegally. Three other Albanians, carrying false identity documents, were caught in Otranto, Lecce, and five Pakistanis were arrested immediately after landing in Santa Cesarea Terme. Thirteen clandestine migrants, the vast majority of them of Albanian origin, were caught at the train stations of Tuturano and Mesagne, two municipalities in the province of Brindisi. Fourteen others were turned back after arriving at the port of Brindisi.
Finally, 19 Albanians were arrested near San Giorgio Ionico, in a municipality near Taranto. They were there without a residence permit.
