Six months in prison for a Chinese illegal immigrant

Tirana Court The “Albanian dream” of a Chinese man who had entered Albania illegally, forging his visa and the stamps in his passport, ended in despair in Tirana prison. The judges in Tirana yesterday sentenced the man from distant China to six months’ imprisonment for this very illegal entry into Albanian territory—a country its own citizens are inclined to leave, longing for Western countries. The story of Chinese national Yu Jin Wei, 22, began in Moscow in April of this year, where, according to his claims, he was deceived by another Chinese national, who provided him with a passport for the Moscow–Rome–Tirana air route. But the passport, as would later become clear, was fake. In fact, the Chinese man had managed to pass successfully under the watchful eyes of the vigilant Russian, Italian, and Albanian customs officers. However, after three months in Albanian territory, the young man from China was caught by our police entirely by chance. After careful examination by experts, the Chinese man’s passport was found to be forged. An investigation into Yu Jin Wei then began; nevertheless, during both the investigation and the trial, he consistently insisted that he had simply been the victim of a fraudster. But the panel of judges, presided over by Mr. Martin Dede, did not believe him. The judges found the Chinese man guilty of two charges: “illegal border crossing” and “use of forged stamps,” sentencing him to six months in prison. It is not known whether, after serving his sentence, which ends in two weeks, the Chinese national will remain in Albania or be deported, thus ending his dream of staying in the Albanian Eldorado.
