Sale of opposition newspapers halted

Yesterday morning, the Head of the Korçë Internal Affairs Branch, Pëllumb Kofuzi, suspended the sale of four newspapers. They were: “Koha Jonë”, “Zëri i Popullit”, “Aleanca”, “Kombi”. When citizens asked the police officers carrying out the order why the sale of these newspapers had been blocked, they answered curtly: “The chairman knows.” We remind readers that this same chairman has also blocked the sale of these newspapers several times in Pogradec.

10 years in prison sought for Arben Lika

Tirana And 23 years for the other three Tirana 10 years in prison sought for Arben Lika And 23 years for the other three Lika risks receiving a harsh sentence: yesterday, in his closing arguments, prosecutor Dritan Ribaj sought 10 years in prison for him. He sought the same sentence for Dashamir Shenaj, an activist with the Youth Federation. For the other two, the prosecutor sought 8 and 5 years. The prosecution’s case appears well fortified, even though the prosecutor has dropped the charge of falsifying official documents, which had weighed against Lika, leaving only the charge of smuggling. According to Ribaj, Lika and the three other defendants knowingly carried out the smuggling of 100 cases of cigarettes. He thus categorically rejected the defendants’ claims that they had had no part in the affair, seeking 10 years for him. Likewise, the prosecutor sought 10 years for Dashamir Shenaj, the other main figure in the episode. The sentence sought was less severe for H. Halili, the truck driver who brought the smuggled cigarette shipment into Albania disguised as humanitarian aid. For the latter, the prosecutor asked that he be deprived of his liberty for 8 years, while he sought 5 years for the trader E. Meçe. Next Monday, the defense will make its final effort before the trial panel confirms its decision, to somewhat eclipse the prosecutor’s words. Z. D.
