Zef Brozi “escapes” to the USA

On Sunday, together with his wife, they left Rinas Airport “I am leaving behind the evil that has been unleashed against me” TIRANA - The former President of the Court of Cassation, Mr. Zef Brozi, together with his wife, Diana, left their home in the capital on Sunday morning and departed for the USA. It was the Malev airline flight that took them Tiranë-Budapest-New York, landing the Albanian “couple of the year” in the land of dreams. The granting of a “Fullbrigt” scholarship to the unemployed Brozi is understood to have been the reason for this trip across the ocean as well. The state’s assault on Brozi had begun in January of this year, when his dismissal was first provoked, reaching its peak at the beginning of September when the date of the “Nano” trial was set in Cassation. The police siege of the building of the third-instance court and his dismissal were also the end of the tenure at the head of this court of the man who, more than anyone else in recent years, fought for its independence. Only a week earlier, he had gotten up earlier than on other days when a police car had arrived at his home “to take the diplomatic passport” which, after his dismissal a month earlier from the post of President of the Court of Cassation, no longer belonged to the person named Zef Brozi. “The state is plotting something against me,” said the former number one of the Albanian courts after that. A few days after his dismissal by a parliamentary vote by the PD deputies, Brozi began preparations to obtain a license to practice law. Curiously, the former high-ranking justice official, described as the most open toward the press and judged by it even in his private life, this time preferred to keep the trip secret. “I am leaving the evil that has been unleashed against me,” Brozi told “KJ”, a few minutes before the plane’s departure. “I will stay in America for a long time,” he adds, thanking the institutions and the American Embassy in Tirana, which made it possible for him to leave Albania at this moment of uncertainty for him. Pluralism with Communism!?

The Socialists would prefer the legalization of the Communist Party Majko: Communism is an indisputable reality in Albania “The Communist Party has its place in the pluralist system in Albania,” says Sabit Brokaj, supported in this case by the young PS deputy, Majko, who says: “The Communist Party must be allowed, since it is becoming part of Albanian reality.” Thus the Socialist Party expresses itself in favor of allowing the communists, made illegal in 1992 by the parliament with the PD majority. The PS opposed that law at the time, yet the communists were declared illegal. After that, the PS has been called a haven for the orphaned communists, and in reality the PS has a hard-line electorate, as one PS leader admits, who prefers to remain silent rather than defend the legalization of the communists. “The communists have nothing more to say, except to talk about the 50 years of dictatorship,” says the leader who does not wish to be named. The ideologues, the young PS deputy, often mentioned as a moderate, sees the legalization of the Communist Party as necessary. page 3
