Today: Albania’s National Day

83 years ago, on 28 November 1912, the Elder of Vlorë, the man Ismail Qemali raised the national flag in Vlorë, solemnly proclaiming Albania’s independence before the Albanians and the world. The long-awaited day had come after many efforts and countless sacrifices by patriots and devoted sons of the homeland, and it was a continuation of the great efforts of our revivalists. But only a year later, the great powers shattered the joy of the country’s independence by splitting the Albanian people in two with the infamous Treaty of London. Afterwards, Albania’s many ordeals would continue; one of Europe’s oldest countries, until on 7 April ’39 the occupying forces of fascist Italy and later those of Nazi Germany occupied Albania in the Second World War. After about 5 years of war, the Albanian partisans managed to free the country from the Nazi-fascist plague, also doing Albania the great honor of joining the camp of the war’s victors, alongside the great powers: the USA, Great Britain, and the former Soviet Union. But if a great victory was celebrated, for about 50 more years Albania was occupied by another “occupier,” the communist ideology, the ideology of the country’s total isolation, the ideology of class struggle, the ideology of the dictatorship of the proletariat, the ideology of spying, imaginary traitors and enemies, and other misdeeds of communist ideology. This is the second year that 28 November is also the day of the country’s liberation from the Nazi-fascist occupiers and their collaborators, as established by today’s Albanian parliament, a date that has sparked many polemics perhaps over these 2 years. The bad thing is that even today, after 50 years, the ghosts of the Second World War are still present in Albania, even at the heights of Albanian politics, disturbing the wounds of war and the ideals of true freedom. So today, Albanians celebrate the day of national freedom, although some still celebrate it differently.
