Two masked, armed men seize around USD 3,000 Police suspect collusion Yesterday at around noon, at approximately twelve o’clock, two unknown individuals stole the safe of the Slovenian airline “ADRIA AIRWAYS.” According to statements by employees of this agency, the two thieves appeared at the offices of the well-known Slovenian company masked and armed with pistols. After first threatening the staff handling ticket sales, putting a gun to the head of a young female employee, they forced the finance employees to hand over all the dollars collected up to that moment. Then they calmly left in an unknown direction, and the police, who were only a few meters away, learned of the incident only after the theft. This case adds to five other robberies of airlines or Albanian banks. Three police officers were just a few meters from the agency’s offices, but they were not alerted. In her statement to the police, one of the employees said that the revolver held to her throat had made her lose her head, and she had given the robbers all the dollars in the safe. The other employees likewise confirmed to the police that they had been so shaken by the pistols and the robbers’ appearance that it had not occurred to them to alert the police, six meters from the offices. After taking the dollars they found in the safe, the thieves left one after the other toward Durrës Street, while the frightened employees remained bewildered for several minutes. The police came to Adria’s offices immediately after the incident, and the chief of Police Station No. 3 himself would set out in pursuit of the thieves, who had still not been found by late last night. According to inside sources at Police Station No. 3 in Tirana, this case was not a theft. “I don’t understand the attitude of Adria’s employees,” one of the people dealing with the case told us. “I agree that the men may have had firearms and threatened them. But after the two masked thieves walked away calmly, why didn’t they alert the three police officers who were no more than six meters from the door? As far as I know, what was stolen amounted to around 2,000–3,000 dollars. The police are always notified after such incidents happen. I regret that I wasn’t notified sooner, because if we had caught both of them, we could have solved all the airline robberies to date,” he concluded. The first airline to be robbed in Albania was Swissair, which would fall victim to a daytime robbery twice. The first documented midday robbery took place almost two years ago, when 300,000 dollars were stolen in full view of the police and the thieves escaped unharmed in an unknown direction. Even today, the thieves who robbed the Savings Bank branch have not been found. The Tirana branch offices of ENSIG also became victims of a robbery not long ago. The “Adria” case is the latest, but its thieves have still not been found.
