Selami predicts another trial for Nano

“Official Tirana has promised to review the Nano trial on the basis of the new Penal Code,” Selami said at yesterday’s meeting of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. During the meeting, developments in the Strasbourg sessions were reported on, where the Albanian side was represented by Spahia, Dokle and Selami. Selami’s statement above is nothing other than the message conveyed to the Albanian delegation in Strasbourg by senior officials of the Council of Europe. They said that the Nano case cannot be a condition for Albania’s accession to the CoE. Council officials have now archived Spahia’s statements from Madrid and Arbnori’s from Tirana. Both of them have acknowledged that, with the new Penal Code, all cases should be reviewed, including the Nano case. Under these circumstances, it seems that official Tirana is trying to find a way to limit the imprisoned Socialist leader. In Paris on 29 May, at the meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe, a special report on the Nano case has also been prepared, among other things. Yesterday, Selami proposed that the Albanian side could be represented at this Committee’s meeting by Spahia or Dokle. “I will see if I can go to Paris,” Spahia replied. And if he decides to attend the meeting of the CoE Legal Affairs Committee, Spahia may go to its next session. The Committee’s rapporteurs already know that Spahia will once again promise a review of the Nano case on the basis of the new Penal Code.
