The 4th anniversary of the newspaper “Koha Jonë”

4th anniversary of the newspaper “Koha Jonë” On 11 May 1991, the first issue of the independent newspaper “Koha jonë” came out, completed at a much lower cost. “Koha jonë”, initially inspired as a local newspaper for the municipality of Lezha, very quickly went beyond the borders of its hometown to become a major newspaper for all Albanians. But on the long and extremely difficult road of information, “Koha jonë” went through difficult moments and perhaps would soon have fallen dead at the very beginning of its journey. Today, when a full 4 years have passed, it seems absurd to recall the difficulties of the beginning. From the 300 copies of the first issue, our circulation grew to 22 thousand. In 1992, the period of non-publication lasted about a month. In May of that year the newspaper, which had even survived for months without being paid, disappeared from the market for 8 months. In 1993 the newspaper was reborn, now with a name, recognition and readers. The efforts around the newspaper show that it once again speaks with a free voice and with the reader's interest. The first editor-in-chief of “Koha jonë” was the journalist and writer Nikollë Lesi. But after a brief interruption, he remained at its head throughout this period and succeeded in creating a newspaper with a name in the minds of Albanians. “Koha jonë”, amid difficulties, continues to preserve the spirit of rebellion and open criticism of power. Its great achievement profoundly changed the face of Albanian journalism, which old authoritarian forces had kept subdued for decades. “Koha jonë” has become the largest tribune of opposition thought in the country. In 1991 political pluralism began in Albania, and so it was born in a turbulent time, giving the country a new voice. Along this path it also experienced many blows, seizures, closures, court proceedings and administrative obstacles. This newspaper stood on the side of the reader, which was often also the side of the unprotected, the poor and those who had no other public tribune. ALEXANDËR FRANGAJ
