3 killed and more than 10 wounded ELBASAN — Screams and blood in the square beside the Zaranika bridge, anguish and tears at the Elbasan surgical hospital. The bus with license plate EL 4047 A, driven by R. Çollaku, was at the center of the tragic incident that occurred last night at the entrance to the city of Elbasan. At least 3 citizens were killed beneath its wheels and approximately 10 others were injured. This was the toll of the accident as of 19:30 yesterday. The Elbasan bus had set off for the village of Mollagjesh, in the Funar area, to transport villagers from the area, most of them the driver’s fellow villagers. As it descended the slope toward the stop in the square by the Zaranika bridge, the brakes compromised driver Çollaku’s control. But while he was [unclear] trying to save the life of a couple on a bicycle, the heavy vehicle ended up on the sidewalk, exactly where the passengers waiting to travel on it were standing. This change of direction caused the tragedy. V. Hasa, 26, from the city of Elbasan, died at the scene; Rabie Sina, 35, a mother of 4 from Mollagjesh; and Fatime Deliu, also from Mollagjesh, who died in the resuscitation room. The police arrived at the same time as the accident. “We immediately took the dead and injured to the hospital,” said the city traffic commander, “and quickly established the circumstances of the incident, while also detaining the driver responsible for the accident.” Meanwhile, the staff of the surgery department at Elbasan hospital are working intensively to prevent any more deaths.
