PS offices robbed

28 chairs disappear ELBASAN - Five days before the PS conference for the Elbasan district, the thief broke down the door of its building in the “Gurabardhi” neighborhood. The local PS leaders noticed the unexpected theft yesterday and immediately checked whether the thieves had taken the documents kept in their offices. But the ordinary thieves took neither papers nor party cards. Perhaps hoping to empty some cash box, they were satisfied only with white plastic chairs. According to the PS leaders in this district, the inventory shows 28 chairs missing, amounting to about 200 thousand lek. The incident, which happened last night, also put the police to work today to identify the perpetrators. Meanwhile, it ranks second for this month after the sensational theft from the city’s dental clinic. BESIM DYBELI

Enver Hoxha’s secret efforts to connect with the Americans

Light on the secret Albanian-American dialogue Behar Shtylla, the Albanian government official tasked with talks with the State Department Nesti Nase, on the left, in the middle the USSR Foreign Minister Gromiko and on the right Behar Shtylla Through the mediation of the Soviet Gromiko, Behar Shtylla first became acquainted with the American diplomat Cohen and later held three meetings with two others, Howard and Kempel, who had come especially from Washington to New York on 14 May. On 8 August 1949, Manush Myftiu had forwarded to Enver Hoxha Behar Shtylla’s report on the talks in New York with the note that “I think we should write to Behar whether he should continue the talks in Paris and how far he should go, because so far he has presented the matter as purely informative and an initiative.” Only on 25 July, through a radiogram from V. Natha-[?]nali, he was sent Enver Hoxha’s message that “ultimately it is in our interest to establish relations with the USA. We accept all the accords and treaties that exist between our two countries, because they do not cause us much trouble, unlike the lack of diplomatic relations. It would be good if this matter also had a favorable resolution before the UNO meeting.” Three years later Enver Hoxha understood what he should have done at the beginning of 1946, and what Noli, Sejfulla Malëshova and others had advised him to do at the time.
