Interview — Ramiz Alia speaks the night before his arrest Politically, I can say that democracy in Albania is fictitious. The country has no Constitution. This is because the leadership of the DP, with Berisha at its head, seeks to place all powers under its control. In fact, he sought to do this with the Constitution he presented on the occasion of the Referendum, which would effectively have made us a country with a democratic monarch. The people rejected the presidential initiative, but Berisha is now effectively achieving his aim without a Constitution: he is imposing himself on Parliament, the executive bodies and the judiciary. By now, everyone is familiar with numerous damning facts, such as those involving the Court of Cassation and the activities of the Constitutional Court, which are truly laughable, not to say unconstitutional. The country is experiencing a climate of political revenge. Revenge from wartime, because the DP is pursuing the anti-communist policy of Balli Kombëtar, the policy followed by this fascist-collaborationist force during that war. My efforts were aimed at preventing bloodshed in our country, ensuring that the transition took place without social or economic trauma, without destruction and nihilism, without upheavals of the shock-therapy kind, which the opposition of that time was so fond of, and instead proceeded gradually, in a spirit of unity and cooperation among all political forces. It was precisely on ensuring that the transition was carried out in this way that I focused all my attention. Unfortunately, the opposition of that time—in other words, today’s rulers—wanted the country’s development to be reset to zero, with everything starting over from scratch. They wanted to destroy everything, all the country’s economic and political structures, under the famous slogan, “Let’s eradicate communism.”
