Risk of Albania being expelled from the Council of Europe

Yesterday, a strong statement by the chairman of the socialist group in the Council of Europe Risk of Albania being expelled from the Council of Europe "Watch the Albanian elections": Alarm among left-wing European parliamentarians "We will not hesitate at all to raise questions about Albania’s membership in the Council of Europe." This strong statement, though directed at all Albanians, was made by Peter Shider, the number one of the socialist parliamentary group and leader of the majority of deputies in the high European body. "Reports from many parliamentarians in other European countries about violations of the Albanian elections, the abusive wording of some articles of the electoral law, the complete control of the ruling party over the zone commissions, as well as the deprivation of civil rights from a large part of the political spectrum," are the strongest reasons threatening Albania’s position in this organization. page 3

Leaders of the Alliance brutally attacked

Police strike the parliamentary candidate E. Janko and journalist A. Hasani Last night, Ceka, Basha and Çupi were prevented from entering Divjakë Yesterday evening, more than 2,000 people had gathered in Divjakë of Lushnjë waiting for the election rally organized by PAD. They had set out to attend the meeting: PAD President Neritan Ceka as well as leaders Basha and Cupi. These, just after being warmly seen off by the residents of the village of Çermë-Shkumbim, took the road toward Divjakë. 3-4 km before the entrance to the village, at the Sulzotaj Bridge, a group of people appeared, with a truck parked across the road and several cars whose plates had been smeared with mud. Only the plate VL 3994 A of one car could easily be distinguished. As soon as the PAD envoys approached, from ten to twelve people with angry faces, bulging eyes, shouting with two fingers raised: "Sali Berisha! Long live Sali Berisha," came out in front of the two arriving cars and stopped them. page 3
