History repeats itself. The axiom seems to have been invented expressly for Student City and the political events associated with it. Exactly six years after Albanian students set out from the hills of Tirana to overthrow communism, during the days when the DP is celebrating the anniversary of its founding, in power and more dominant than ever in terms of numbers, virtually the same petition, with virtually the same demands, has emerged from the same buildings. And that is not all: the students are calling on people to unite around the same person, Azem Hajdari. A statement signed by the Albanian Independent Student Union has reported that yesterday afternoon, during a meeting between the union and the students, a petition was drafted calling for better conditions in student residences, an increase in the scholarship, libraries stocked with the necessary literature, a review of the issue of military service for students, and the return to use of the Union holiday camps. This is the economic part of the petition, which, just as in December 1990, also includes non-economic demands that in fact make up its most delicate part. The students are demanding their own radio station and newspaper, the resignation of the director of RTV, and solidarity with the trade-union movement and “with the president of BSPSH, Mr. Azem Hajdari.” And the students do not intend to leave Hajdari alone at the trade-union rally he will organize today near “Qemal Stafa” Stadium. The students’ petition threatens to boycott classes at the beginning of next January. Its demands, many of which are economically manageable for the government, do not seem to be aimed—as they were not aimed then—at warm rooms and good food in the canteens.
