The right and the left
When Fatos Nano, in his role as prime minister, would declare that the Government is committed to carrying out aggressive right-wing reforms, few people have understood the essence of it.
The statement has been taken as a shift to the right within the PS, rather than as a forced undertaking of emergency reforms by the coalition government. In an open letter that the former PS leader Servet Pëllumbi addressed to the party's General Steering Committee, this tendency of Nano's was sharply criticized. There are many citizens who have been frightened and are now anxiously awaiting the radicalization of the economic situation, which has not yet been felt. The citizens' misunderstanding also stems from Nano's pronounced academic style in dealing with sensitive socio-economic problems. But from Nano's statements, the senior representatives of the Euro-Atlantic organizations have remained satisfied, and this is the first step of the Albanian government toward unblocking the projects of the Meksi Governments and the possibility of receiving other aid for the country. Nano has now understood what they like to hear.
According to Pëllumbi, the left-wing program cannot accept "imposed measures of a right-wing character." He bases this on the prime minister's statement that "the political Bible of the future activity of the PS is the political program of the new center-right government." Pëllumbi's thesis starts from the fact that in a very poor country like ours, it seems an absurd contradiction to implement a right-wing program without such a consolidated class.
But in the present case, this is about reforms that this government is obliged to carry out and that are feasible. And in the end, when the establishment of macroeconomic order, as requested by the IMF and the World Bank, is achieved, there comes a fall in prices, an increase in social assistance, and improvements in wages and pensions, which is in favor of the poor strata. This may be the calculation and meaning of Nano's statements, who is certainly not intending to change his electorate. This is the only path left to the PS leader in order to implement the program of the social groups he represents.
A politician like Nano has taken into account that the first reforms will increase dissatisfaction within his party ranks, but the main concern remains international support, whose backing will bring money and economic stability and, consequently, the longevity of this government. The internal faction, which not long ago threatened Berisha, remains of little importance to Nano at the moment in the KPD. The voices that may rise against him at the PS National Conference do not worry the prime minister, who even from prison knew how to "bring the party he leads to heel."
Pëllumbi's latest letter, despite its highly social sense, has enormously damaged Fatos Nano's ability to leave his international card credible. He now seems to have translated the former deputy chairman's letter in order to keep it with him like a diplomatic suitcase, during his trip to Rome and Brussels.
