Visa smuggling. The scandal takes over the press
The Greek visa mafia
Regarding visa smuggling, Spiegel reported that last summer Athens police units caught some of the organizers of this operation. “Albania now has a genuine smuggling infrastructure,” writes Der Spiegel and asks what it is being built with? Are 5,000 Albanian refugees going to Bari on Wednesday? In any case, this is not about ships, but about gangs of specialists with sea motors and fishermen’s boats. At least that is what one of the people organizing these transports told the major German newspaper. “If you calculate it at $2,000 per person, it is a very profitable business,” he says. Yet it is advancing with great difficulty because, in reality, Albanians are poor and many of them have already ended up paying dearly in order to go to Italy and Greece.
But how are emigrants caught? One way is paying to obtain a residence permit. The other, and most dangerous, is finding someone who knows the route to Germany. According to Spiegel, at the end of last week the Greek police arrested a policeman who had helped an emigration and even more so the wars. People pay thousands of marks to a man who seeks to obtain a residence permit in Germany. Clandestines, those who pay, prefer to travel with false documents or with Greek certificates or identity cards stolen from emigrants in Athens and Thessaloniki. In his article, “La Repubblica” gave importance to a gang that processes stolen identity cards for 100 marks. The same applies to visa stamps.
Illegal migration is taking on new dimensions especially now that Italy has begun sending illegal refugees back to Albania. Thousands of them have arrived through Bari, Brindisi, Otranto, Lecce and other Italian ports. The photo shows a scene of the arrival of Albanian emigrants in an Italian port.
“At one end, a proximity from Greece. Another proximity of names at the consulate.”
