BY TEODOR KEKO One day, when a man at Kafe Europa was asked what he was doing, he gave a brief reply: —As long as I’m just sitting around, I wander aimlessly!... It seems to me that our politicians, too, have been wandering aimlessly for a long time! People without concrete ideas, this pack of hungry parasites waits only for the opponent’s moves, then launches into endless talk, whose purpose, at bottom, is to remind Albanians that they, “our guardian angels,” are still alive! Nano talks about more radical integration into Europe and the opposition calls him a “traitor,” just as Berisha was called one yesterday over the Sazan affair! A military agreement is made between two neighboring countries and the opposition howls in unison: “This is an occupation!”, just as Berisha was accused yesterday by his opponents… That the roads are appalling, that we have no electricity, water, schools or jobs, that taxes are not being paid and that there are far too many masks being put on, is something no one remembers. One would think politicians do not deal with “trifles” of this kind! But in fact these “trifles” are what turn into votes for or against during election campaigns, while whether Toni Bler shook hands with Fatos Nano or Berisha met with Shiraku fades into the background compared with the hardships Albanians face. This gathering of politicians, accustomed to benefiting not from their own creativity but from their partner’s mistakes, forgets that voters do not vote for you based on whether you met, or did not meet, the President of America, but on whether you have taken away their garbage or not! During the previous government, many Albanians had the opportunity to become prosperous and, nevertheless, they rebelled against Berisha. Why? Because he was arrogant and blatantly underestimated “the little things.” From these seven years of democracy, politicians can now draw a few lessons. They should be more creative than magpie hunters, because even the well-known song “I’ll take my shotgun and go hunting” belongs to folklore today. As a voter, I’m not very interested in how many interests Nano met with around the world. I want to know how many dollars he secured for his country, where and how those dollars will be invested. As a voter, I’m not very interested in Berisha’s opinion of Nano. I want to know how PD will put the country in order tomorrow, if it gets another chance. We’re all brave when it comes to words, but let me remind you of the proverb of Luma: “Luma’s dogs won’t eat if you sit on your arse—but is there an arse to sit on?”…
