BY FRROK ÇUPI We all acknowledge that we are in a grave national situation; at the same time, we all understand very little. Everyone follows their own philosophy, and absurdity seeps in among the will of the majority like a novelty(!). What is happening? The former President, who left amid the catastrophe of the state, now calls for war; another wants to form a private army in the North; some call for the government to step down; the Prime Minister is threatened with murder; people are summoned to the square as if it were the nation’s wedding and not the nation’s death throes; “Against the state Alliance, come on, for the Nation”—they said yesterday at an “opposition” rally; others lecture about a “traitorous state,” the “selling of Kosovo,” “Karamahmud Pasha and Esat Pasha”... Where are we, then? Fortunately, we live on a land that is also called a State. Unfortunately, many either try to, or are already, denying the state. The state—now or never! In all the most difficult moments for a people or nation, the state is the most essential instrument for overcoming the situation. A magical bond exists between the state and the citizen: while a good citizen criticizes and corrects the instrument of the state every day as a “dissatisfied” person, a day comes when they bless their own state. Citizens strengthen the state through their suffering so that this instrument may be used more effectively on a difficult day. On the nation’s difficult day, the state becomes the commander of all. We Albanians find ourselves at precisely such a moment: Respect the state; it is now the representative of the nation and the population. Without it, tomorrow we will lose shamefully. So, what should we do? We can say that the state itself must place itself in the representative position for which it was elected by the majority. We can say that it is time to declare that “we are at war,” and that political pluralism should be restricted and controlled. We can say that public speech may also be controlled. Let it be decided that the squares should not be used to rile people up either. Finally, this is an excellent opportunity to show humanity that we are such a progressive people that we respect our state. If we do not do so now, our brothers in Kosovo will be told, “You do not deserve a state; those in Albania trample theirs.” And our patriots are shouting, “For Kosovo, against the Albanian state.” Bastard patriots! Above all, we have that precious and rich asset for which our Kosovar brothers are making the greatest sacrifice. Tomorrow we will have plenty of time for criticism and anti-state courage.
