BY ENTON ABILEKAJ After a long absence from party activity, at a moment when it was thought that Pashko had definitively abandoned his political ambitions in order to contribute quietly to the building of the State, a surprise occurred yesterday. Gramoz Pashko, the Prime Minister’s Senior Economic Adviser, one of the first leaders of pluralism and later of the PAD, returned to party activity with the charisma that characterizes him. Yesterday he became chairman of the Assembly of the Democratic Alliance Party, a role that had become entirely impossible for his predecessors, but which was immediately reassessed yesterday when Pashko presented himself as an alternative. He immediately shattered the 100-percent conformism within the PAD by taking the majority away from Ceka. Contrary to what the president of the coalition party had declared, the majority in the PAD was in favor of continuing in government. Ceka’s undisputed standing in the party immediately began to be questioned. Pashko made it clear straight away that Ceka does not represent the majority’s view when he speaks about the Government. This was the first move that immediately brought the PAD back into the spotlight. This party, which until yesterday still had no offices, today feels strong, with two alternatives, Ceka and Pashko, facing one another to help restore a party with many prominent figures but still little electoral support. In truth, the mythologizing of one man had damaged this important coalition party. Many people who tried to offer an alternative in their views lost out to Ceka’s charisma and then left. The PAD has lost more than ever since 29 June. Things are different now, when the PAD has two ministers who think differently from Ceka and an alternative within the party in the form of the Prime Minister’s adviser. It seems that with Pashko’s victory yesterday, what had been anticipated within the PAD came to pass: an immediate reaction by its members against leaving the Government. Not only Pashko’s, Imani’s and Teta’s faction, but also the other members of this party’s highest forum are reluctant to leave the Government, now that, after five years of discrimination, they have finally managed to secure work that is more or less politically guaranteed. Ceka must have understood yesterday that the option of leaving the Government requires more arguments, or should not exist under these circumstances. With the Ceka-Pashko duel, the PAD will have the chance not to be merely an ornament of the SP within the alliance. This move also seems to have pleased Nano, who has been disparaged by many people, some of whom have been very close to him. Now the Prime Minister will feel stronger and will no longer see the PAD as “Ceka’s party,” which he had expected to part ways with, but as a partner from whom he can gain—and lose—a great deal.
