BY MARTIN LEKA When two days ago the terrible remains of the raising of the I Katërti i Radës from the bottom of Otranto were brought back to mind—the tragedies of 12 months ago—in Vlora, despite having felt, at most, a tear near the eye, they also felt their great pain during last spring, part of which was the tragedy of 81 innocent victims, most of them children and women. Various Italians, from Prodi to Berlusconi, Bertinotti, etc., have experienced such painful emotions too. The “CLANDESTINE” phenomenon is not an exclusively Albanian experience, although in recent years this small Balkan country has become the “Great Gate of Shayer”, the “paradise” of a handful of people and the “hell” of many others. Whereas at the beginning of the 1990s the clandestine phenomenon was justified by Albania’s long-awaited opening, which also brought other social and psychological consequences, the later anal- has other causes and consequences. The lack of investment, unem-ployment, the economic situation and a range of domestic factors have made fore-ign kajfu, especially Italian ones, systematic targets for clandestines arriving from the neighbouring country. In recent days, the new Italian government has resumed a campaign of worrying proportions. To be truthful, the cause of this phenomenon should not be sought only among Albanians or in the government. If, for Albanian clandestines and the neighbouring Albanian case, the same cannot be said of the Kurds or Kosovars. The causes of the clandestinity of these latter two groups should not be sought in the Albanian government, but in the repressive regimes of their countries. If the Italian government is packing the bags of Interior Minister Jervolino for his arrival in Tirana in two days, perhaps it should first have reduced ... the long and often innocent [people] in front of the embassy in T- ... had denied the outcome concerning the Italian consulate in Vlora, or had undertaken ... more strongly Beo- ... for his racist demonstration against the unprotected Albanian population ... Italian pressure on the Albanian government for aid and concessions ... cannot solve the clandestine issue, cannot solve ... “Kater i Rades”. TIRANA — An engineer is killed inside his shop. Yesterday at around 20:40 in the evening, near the “Piaza” restaurant, 51-year-old Gëzim Dabulla was killed by an unidentified person. Police sources said that the causes and motives for the killing have not yet been fully clarified. The killer fled in an unknown direction. For now, several lines of investigation into the murder are being pursued, and all remain open until the circumstances are clarified. However, these are conclusions drawn only from the preliminary investigation, as everything is expected to be clarified today. According to the police account, the victim had been working in his television-repair shop and was completely alone. Suddenly, the killer entered the shop and shot 51-year-old Dabulla with a pistol, killing him on the spot. The killer then drove away. A resident of an apartment near Dabulla’s shop alerted the police. They arrived at the scene several minutes later and took the victim to hospital. But the severe wounds he had sustained caused his immediate death. Another police source said that a grenade and an unexploded stick of tritol were found at the scene, apparently left inside the shop by the killer. It is not yet known what the killer’s real aim was or why he would leave the explosive material inside the shop. All this is expected to be clarified in the police’s further investigations. The number of murders has recently continued to rise. Just 13 hours earlier, not many metres from the victim’s shop, the head of the trade unionists, Astrit Balluku, was killed.
