BY TEODOR KEKO A vote has winners and losers, but voting does not show only that. It has its own subtexts and is the consequence of a particular reality. Now, three days after the latest vote, we can make our first analyses of what happened. 1. The real winner of the referendum was indifference! Almost half of Albanians did not deign to vote, with the motto: “And who are you supposed to vote for?!” At heart, many Albanians do not trust the current political class. They consider this political class incapable and corrupt. This may not be true, but Sunday’s vote showed that this idea has by now become a reality! 2. The Socialist electorate has not dwindled! This is an illogical reality, considering that after these 17 months of Socialist government in Albania, the country still does not even smell of a functioning state, and people are fed up. But perhaps Berisha is what is preventing the loss of votes. It seems that most Albanians are very afraid of this politician and are ready to keep the Socialists in power for a long time, just so Berisha does not win again. From this perspective, the PD, and Berisha himself, must find new ways to be competitive in the next elections. The PD must be aware that the PS won the latest votes without making any great effort. Nano, for example, did not send his electorate even a single message urging them to mobilize. If we accept that the winner of this referendum was indifference, the question arises: which political formation will attract the more than 30 percent of the Albanian electorate that did not vote? Has the time come for this large group to gather in a new political formation? It seems there is every likelihood that these indifferent voters are centrists. But the current centre has shown that, on its own, it cannot gather even 4 percent of the vote. So, essentially, however you look at it, you arrive at a new leader. All the parties need to change their leaders. The current leaders no longer have any magnetic power to attract voters. Now they only push and expand the group of the indifferent. If these same leaders lead the parties in the next vote, we can predict today that no more than 50 percent of Albanians will take part in the elections!

The Albanian Socialist Party is filing complaints in several districts across the country and has taken to court, on charges of manipulation, the Local Government officials who dealt with the lists. After issuing numerous instructions the day before the referendum, the Socialists can no longer allow manipulation. All the more so because it has now become commonplace in every electoral campaign held in the country.
