Politics of the day

BY MENTOR KIKIA When the transformer of the electrical boxes switches on and soon starts to smoke, and the lights in the house go on and off without warning, we know that a glitch has caught us in the TV network and, with the usual old carelessness, they are playing with us. Meanwhile, in political hiccups or political moves, we continue to wait, as most Albanians do, as if it were not important. But the more governments change from one to another, the more we know they will be worn out and replaced with a change. And that is another term of our politics, a governing turn. Meanwhile, we citizens, who watch with indifference and feel as if it is all a scene, do not object. And with regret, when there are signs as if things have changed, it turns out that governments remain the same in tone. The only change is that it does not enter, but the governing turn. Meanwhile, we citizens, who watch with indifference and feel as if it is all a scene, are looking at a politics that resembles a wheel game. It seems that we are carrying out such a division of roles and performances. In this situation, many things are delayed and their importance fades. And this is clearly seen in the political behavior of recent days. Clashes, statements, accusations, denials and commonplace words are filling public life. At the same time, many citizens’ problems remain outside the attention of politics. Many feel that in this country one continues to live with rhetoric and not with solutions. Albania has once again entered a climate in which everyone speaks about others and little about themselves. Instead of confronting people’s problems, the political sides invent accusations and excuses. In this sense, December 8 appears as a symbolic date, but not necessarily as a moment of reflection for this political class. Perhaps for this reason, the celebration of the forums has nonetheless remained in a lukewarm atmosphere. Part of society sees it as a symbol of freedom, while another part sees it as an exhausted political ritual. This is a sign that the times call for more seriousness, less noise and more responsibility. And in the end, the question remains the same: will our politics emerge from this vortex of words and tired roles? Or will it continue to repeat itself on the same stage, with the same actors and the same ending?

Criminals on the gallows

After the wave of killings of innocent people by masked men, there is only one answer: relatives from both sides and the masked men. Even in the USA, which has been and remains the country of modern criminal spread, it is the police, which forces demo- cracies to take the harshest possible measures. If until now public order and safety in our country have been at the mercy of fate and drained without a pilot, we blame the administration, the police or the judiciary. But if a democratic government allows criminals to kill without fear in the streets and in their homes, then society has the right to demand accountability and to demand exemplary punishments. This is why many today are calling for the state not to be content with declarations, but to provide proof that it is on the side of citizens and not on the side of fear. In this climate, the call for extreme measures becomes a understandable reaction from society. It is no surprise that voices are rising from across the country calling for the return of harsher sentences for the perpetrators of macabre crimes. This reflects not only people’s fear, but also the loss of trust in the ability of institutions to establish order. Criminals on the gallows
