By FATOS LUBONJA Since the coalition led by the PS came to power, the issue that has most concerned public opinion is the lack of authority of the state. Most Albanians are furious when they see people like Sali Berisha continuing an intense destabilizing activity without encountering any obstacle. People are even more frightened by this activity being accompanied by terror through the formation of gangs. A question arises: perhaps the PS and its allies still have not taken power? Perhaps the PD has its people everywhere, putting a spoke in the wheels of the new government? Even if that is so, it does not justify the government’s ineffectiveness. There are two ways to establish authority. One is to clean out the state apparatus and appoint loyal people to it. The other is effective work, carried out with honesty and dedication, which would strengthen public support and compel most of Berisha’s supporters to show respect. The current government is proving ineffective on both fronts. It seems that the path of purging cannot be pursued on the scale used by the PD, because it did so in the name of an anti-communist reform. Meanwhile, as for commendable actions that would make authority more deserved and more lasting, the situation looks quite desperate. What has changed, people are asking more and more? There is indeed an atmosphere of tolerance, but it reeks of an inability to control the situation, which makes uncertainty about the future deeply felt. You learn appalling facts and wonder how they remain merely newspaper headlines. The lack of active response to them heightens the feeling of a state that is apathetic and unserious. Meanwhile, accusations of corruption are gaining credibility. The idea is taking hold that “these people” are concerned only with lining their pockets, that the broken threads of corruption are being tied back together for their own benefit, and that the opposition knows their dirty secrets, so they have no moral strength. Things do not change immediately; patience is also needed. But people would be twice as patient if they saw that, at the very least, they were led by dedicated and honest people who start work in the morning and leave at midnight. General grumbling is inevitable, especially as their power is fading more than they are feeling it as a heavy and arduous burden. Meanwhile, time waits for no one while they both line their pockets and see how it [ [?] ] works for Albania, tourism, and works for Albania. More and more, the reason for supporting this government is being reduced to the Berisha danger. But that is a negative reason, one that inspires no one and cannot last, because Albanians, unfortunately, have short memories. The time has come for some in power either to act resolutely and energetically against the evils that are preventing their authority from rising, or to make way for people who are more dedicated and serious.
