BY FRROK ÇUPI A great and absurd misfortune is befalling us: We do not know what our job is. If we were to ask each person: What is your job today? One would answer that they are waiting to see what Parliament will decide about immunity; another would say that the government’s leniency concerns them; a third would say that the communists are taking revenge on democracy... and so on, and so on. Is that a job?! Of course, a citizen of a country has a civic duty to know what is happening in their country—with politics, the economy, culture, and so on. But this is not the only civic duty. The first is to engage in work, giving value to oneself and then to society as well. Yet in our country, it continues to be the case that no one knows what an individual’s job is. Instead of society gaining breadth, it has narrowed its very original being. Unfortunately, this opens the way to two further evils. The evil of governance, which suits an enslaved individual because they do not know themselves. Even in this period of governance, which emerged from the most severe crisis faced by Albanians, the same picture can be seen: a government that has collapsed in its relationship with individual engagement. Instead of work, the government serves up to those it governs, every day, a little crime, a few crumbs from Europe, a little Parliament, a letter from the world, a bit of spectacle with the opposition figure who speaks incoherently, or even a quarrel between institutions—concocted in small offices. And finally, a little hope that you can go out into the street and not be killed. Is this all the government’s job is?! When the government tells citizens that it is guaranteeing their lives, then citizens ask for nothing more. A little bread, and the whole day spent discussing what was said and what was done. A citizen “beaten down” in this way is unable to think about what their job is and what the government’s job is. The “good” of anti-government forces, which are being called the “opposition,” begins where the government and citizens are not honest with one another and do not understand each other’s jobs. This is where the quarter of state politics enters and finds fertile ground. By staging spectacular acts with weapons, bombs and slander, they have one success guaranteed: It is certain that they will take the government and the governed along behind their cart. In this way, no one does the right job. Neither the citizen, nor the government, nor the opposition. Our country suffers from it all, each one, one by one. What should we do? We must start from the beginning: Think about what each person’s job is.
