BY TEODOR KEKO These past few days, there has been a lot of talk in central Albania about changes in the country’s government. Since this topic interests many people, it shows that the matter is serious. There is no doubt that changes are needed here—indeed, radical ones—because we are witnesses to the fact that our affairs of government have traditionally not gone well. It is well known that our state apparatus, yesterday, today and the day before yesterday, contains thieves. So how is it possible that, when a rational idea is put forward, all the small parties should stay away and declare, “We will break up the coalition if you remove so-and-so from the government”? The first question to ask is: Do we need changes or not? If we don’t, then let’s talk. But when they are essential, why talk about a boycott? If someone doesn’t like the change, then who is it that doesn’t like it? Is it the PSD or the AD, because one of their ministers is going to be replaced? But should such a small political minority raise its voice so loudly just because two of its people have been replaced? I think the small parties in government should not make so much noise, just as the small opposition parties—which live only thanks to the PD—should not. It is now well known that some parties or MPs in the governing camp are in our parliament only because the PS wanted them there, just as some opposition individuals are in Parliament only because the PD wanted them there. If they came out tomorrow as “independent,” could they even exist? I think that, for now, they cannot survive without an umbrella, so, given this logic, it seems absurd to me to hear threats directed at the government from people who are simply a façade. Under these circumstances, it would be better for the PS to form the government itself and govern on its own, because it has received a vote of confidence. That way, the PS would answer to voters if the government’s work did not go well. But picking a fight or demanding answers from someone who has no power is also wrong. Perhaps now is the moment for Nano, after that “why did you remove [him] instead of him,” to consolidate the country’s government again—and that is his right, since he is the person we appointed to govern. Nano’s business is how he will govern us. Our business is how we will vote. Now the little ones would do well to keep quiet. Their worth becomes clear in the big games. Nano should play his game now, if he wants to show what he is worth...
