The cancer of politics
In response to Nano’s move concerning the idea of a dialogue between government and opposition to reach consensus on a strategy for the future, opposition leader Berisha has answered immediately with two significant moves: agreeing to an open debate with his Socialist opponent, Nano, and yesterday issuing a call to investigate the assets of all politicians—naturally, without excluding himself. The illegal enrichment of politicians, first and foremost those who have held or currently hold power, throughout the entire period of pluralism, has been one of the most widely discussed and debated topics. During the five years in opposition, corruption among PD officials in power was one of the main arguments in the propaganda of the Socialists and their allies. No senior official, nor even local-government official, of the PD was spared from becoming the target of accusations of corruption and abuse of office, accompanied by staggering figures for the money allegedly obtained in this way. The opposition of the time expressed such confidence on this matter that ordinary people—including fervent supporters of the PD—thought that, after the left came to power, the files on government corruption would be opened, thereby dotting the “i’s.” It was even thought that the corruption dossier would deliver Berisha and his party a death blow. Yet, although a year has passed, nothing has happened. So far, state bodies have not produced even one concrete fact to substantiate the accusations made over those five years in this regard. Worse still, with the roles reversed, Socialist officials are being accused of corruption and illegal gains perhaps even more than before. But what the Socialists “forgot” to do, Berisha remembered to do himself, taking the initiative to open the file on the wrongdoings of his former government first. With yesterday’s proposal to establish a commission to “dig into” politicians’ pockets, the Democratic leader has extended his attack across the entire political spectrum, declaring an open challenge to his opponents in power. In doing so, the PD leader further strengthens his position on the political scene. If the Socialists were to answer Berisha’s challenge—even by chopping heads from their own ranks—the credit would still go to the opposition leader as the instigator of the fight against the cancer of corruption. Otherwise, those in power will be left to ask themselves the same question and be branded “defenders of corruption,” thus further confirming the thesis that they are connected to the corrupt former PD officials who once held power.

At yesterday’s session, Parliament postponed the vote on a decree by the President of the Republic concerning the CEC voting procedure, following a request by the PS Parliamentary Group. After a meeting lasting around an hour and a half at the premises of the People’s Assembly, the PS Group asked for time to discuss within the group and with the relevant institutions the decree of President Rexhep Meidani, countersigned by Deputy Prime Minister Bashkim Fino.
