How can order be restored in Albania?

Opinion After the remarks of the “Group of Friends for Albania” held in Vienna on 24 February 1999 How can order be restored in Albania? By MP Nikollë Lesi No citizen in Albania is pursued, discriminated against, or despised because of age, religion, sex, region, or family and social background. No citizen has any reason to leave the country in order to save his life. He has a job, he supports his family, he is paid regularly, and his children continue to attend school in safety. The state protects private property when it has been earned by sweat, brain and merit. Municipal authorities and institutions have buildings and sidewalks for pedestrians, while transport is comfortable and leisure is free. Waste is not dumped haphazardly here and there. Albania has European standards and foreigners come as tourists, even to spend their retirement years in old age. This is the most beautiful “dream” of every Albanian. And apparently not a distant one. If the above things exist, then we can say that Albania is a state. It has a people and it also has a state. Otherwise, we are still a people who came from the mountains for civilization. This cursed democracy has been going on for 9 years. Although it is called pluralist, it has brought only chaos and insecurity. There is no state and no nation. Albania is a crowd of people coming from dead times or dissatisfied with life. Recently, the group “Friends of Albania” came out with 14 proposals and offered a massive cure for the country. Their remarks, to be honest, are not original. They have often been put forward as proposals by other Albanian scholars, but they continue to remain outside any consideration. In fact, they make up the most important part of the political program of the Legality Movement. Such as: to create a technical government, not a party coalition; to reorganize the judiciary and the police; to restore the monarchy, and so on. If the word “restoration” is frightening someone, let him read carefully and without prejudice what kind of state and democracy this country has had. As for those who call for the legalization of the monarchy as a system, in order to justify their academic silence, I believe we can speak about it in the future. However, the great experiences of this century should never be excluded. In the end, something must be radically changed, or democracy has no chance. In all European countries, pluralism has been based on the consensus of the political class, among which power has alternated. Here, however, we have been trapped like in a fortress. We consider our opponents mortal enemies, while every officeholder tries to use the entire state in revenge until the end of his mandate. Therefore, as a necessary solution, there must be a technical government led by a patriotic personality. People burdened by party ties or won through deals cannot govern well. And over these years in Albania, governance has become increasingly difficult for us. The state has been left in the hands of corruption and narrow interests. (Read page 17)
