During this one-year period of Majko’s government, the circle of opponents he has had to face has been narrowing. Thus, following the meeting with opposition leader Berisha—which also coincided with a considerable softening of the line pursued by the DP up to that point—the new prime minister’s main opponent would, quite unexpectedly, turn out to be the former leader of his own party, Nano, and his associates. The attack launched by Nano aims at his rapid return to the head of the party, without openly expressing ambitions for the prime minister’s seat, which is in fact the main goal of this prominent but unlucky socialist politician. Nevertheless, the logic behind such an attack is quite clear. By taking control of the party, Nano and his group can easily impose their will on Majko and bring him down at the moment most convenient for them. And now, with all public attention—and above all that of the socialist electorate—focused on the Majko-Nano duel, few may realize that Majko’s greatest danger is coming from another direction. The major challenges the government team must face now, following the end of the war for Kosovo, have, among other things, begun to expose the presence in government of incompetent or corrupt elements, even some linked to dubious circles of pyramid firms such as “2K”, which Farudin Arapi has publicly accused. Meanwhile, the international community’s accurate observations and assessments of the negative phenomena dominating present-day Albania have identified government reshuffles as an immediate step. Such a move is also being urged by the exposure of scandals made public by the independent media. Consequently, ministers belonging to this category have been gripped by the panic caused by the fear of dismissal. It is precisely this fear that makes them play every gambit. This fear has made them play every card to avoid losing the privileges secured through their ministerial seats, or at least something more powerful than those seats. Aware that “the money” is unlikely to work against Majko, some of these ministers seem to have chosen to attack the prime minister. Certain circles outside the government have also joined the “anti-Majko” campaign that has been under way “behind the scenes” for some time—above all, particular leaders of right-wing parties, who are associated with ministers expected to be dismissed any day now. Under these circumstances, any delay by Majko in implementing changes to his cabinet will be fatal. As time passes and matters grow more complicated, he will find himself confronted with faits accomplis, feel completely paralyzed, and may see himself as an instrument in the hands of the political mobsters operating within the cabinet he leads.
