Greek media launch a campaign against Albania pages 2–3

President Meidani’s recent visit to China was presented by the official and pro-government media as a great success. Apart from the declarative aspect, which included no shortage of references to the longstanding “friendship” between the two countries, said now to be “entering a new phase,” various agreements were also mentioned under which Communist China would play the role of a major partner in the construction of several important facilities. In this way, such announcements from official sources seemed to somewhat soften the paradox created between the Western orientation of Albanian policy and the role certain circles in Albanian politics are seeking to assign to Beijing. Nevertheless, bearing in mind that the visit by the Albanian head of state took place after the visits of Russian Boris Yeltsin and Serbian Živadin Jovanović, Belgrade’s foreign minister, one immediately concludes that the timing chosen for the visit was wrong. Specifically, assessing President Meidani’s visit in terms of foreign policy, especially where Kosovo is concerned, it must be said that this was a genuine fiasco. This is all the more evident if we recall Meidani’s statements concerning China–Taiwan relations: not only did he officially recognize Taiwan as an inseparable part of China, and categorically reject any possibility of a potential China–Taipei dialogue, but he also expressed optimism about Taiwan’s very swift reunification with China. Yet Chinese officials did not reciprocate these positions of the Albanian president when it came to Kosovo. As soon as Meidani left Beijing, the Chinese leaders told the Yugoslav foreign minister, who arrived there immediately after Meidani’s departure, that they supported Yugoslavia’s territorial integrity—which, in the language of Beijing’s policy, means that Kosovo is an inseparable part of Yugoslavia, specifically Serbia. Don’t be surprised: Beijing told its friend from Belgrade—and, as if that were not enough, Beijing also told its friend from Belgrade—that next year China would veto the extension of NATO troops’ mandate in Kosovo, which presupposes their replacement by the Serbian police and army.
