As the congress dates of the two parties that dominate the Albanian political scene draw closer, the manoeuvring of groups, factions and individual contenders to secure maximum support and increase their chances of achieving the desired victory is becoming increasingly acceptable. As far as the PD is concerned, Berisha's authority and a certain mistrust among Berisha's declared opponents of Pollo's sudden move have created a relatively calm atmosphere in this regard within the party. The situation in the Socialist Party is quite different. There has been constant talk there of alliances—few in number and mostly hypothetical—between those who have so far declared their ambitions for the chairmanship, left vacant after Nano's sudden resignation at the beginning of this year.
