The chairman of the Democratic Party begins activity against the visit of his rival. Sali Berisha, descending into the hotel “Excelsior” in Paris, where the agency “Majo Tours” had issued his ticket, declared that “Berisha’s last trip, the one to Tirana on 17 June” is motivated to depart and go for a long time, but on that trip he will set off himself. According to close reports, he is going through a very busy week in order to avoid Pollo’s meeting with American officials.
In the first two days, the president of the republic and the prime minister of Albania have been involved in a series of contacts with envoys of the American administration. While stating in his own offices that “the president’s envoys” would not recognize the prime minister, with other statements they do not affirm, but say that “the dazzling coronation,” yet in the panorama of the political events of the week there is also a shared dinner in the hotel “Tirana”.
In this context, sources close to the Democratic Party headquarters claim that its structures have been set in motion to follow the opposition leader’s movements step by step. Likewise, a good part of the information has focused on Pollo’s agenda in Paris and Rome. Meanwhile, senior Democratic Party leaders believe that every public appearance by Pollo in Western capitals is seen with concern, especially when it concerns contacts with American officials.
Analysts close to the opposition believe that this move by the Democratic Party is an effort to keep control over relations with international partners. According to them, Pollo’s visit constitutes a direct challenge to Berisha’s authority within the party. For this reason, the campaign against him has focused both on political statements and on indirect interventions near diplomatic contacts.
The spheres of influence and the internal sources of the new structures within the party suggest that a new clash between Berisha’s supporters and the group backing Pollo is not ruled out. Nor should a formalization of this conflict in the coming weeks be excluded. It appears that contacts in international circles have also been reorganized in order to clarify and avoid any interpretation that would favor one side.
The main concern of the Berisha camp, according to sources, is that a meeting between Pollo and representatives of the American administration would be interpreted as political recognition of him. For this reason, it has been requested that the visit be kept low-profile and not be accompanied by public statements. However, the American side has given no संकेत that it will change its approach because of these requests.
In political circles in Tirana, it is said that the unofficial response from the American side has been cold: “Let the old one go, let the young one come.” This formula, conveyed as a comment in political environments, has been interpreted as a sign of fatigue with the prolonged Albanian crisis and with the figures who have dominated it. If this is accurate, then Pollo’s visit may take on a larger symbolic weight than the scheduled meetings themselves.
