The statement attributed to Minister Milo (“it would be catastrophic if this government were to fall apart”) can be nothing more than evidence that he still has not understood the essence of the office he has held for two years. For many reasons: A diplomat of Hill’s calibre could never take such a categorical position, which is also an assessment that is as unmotivated as it is at odds with the stated positions of US government representatives, who have never, under any circumstances, made “en bloc” assessments of the entire M[?]lo cabinet. There is no need to recall the remarks about the exp[?] of the three American ambassadors, who in succession have also mentioned specific members of the Majko cabinet. Even if they held such an opinion, it could not have been expressed in Milo’s presence, since to date he has never been invited to or met with any senior representative of the American Administration, much less with his counterpart Albright, in a recognised bilateral or counterparts’ meeting. All the meetings Milo has attended have either been alongside senior government and state officials, or at multilateral meetings where not meeting him cannot be justified by diplomatic etiquette, or even by the role Albania should have played and should play during the crisis and the current regional situation. To take this “en bloc” assessment of the current government as true would mean that the US opposes the statement made by the Group of Friends of Albania in Brussels two months ago, which calls for improvements throughout the entire government. The great and welcome interest of the US in the healthy development of democracy in Albania, the country’s economic progress and stability is linked to the development of democratic values, of a connected development of democratic values, civil liberties, institutions, the rule of law, the fight against illegal trafficking, etc. It is also linked to establishing stable relations and increasing regional cooperation in a positive way. For the US, as the most impartial supporters of Albanian politics, their concern for the stability and progress of our country in the region serves the development of democratic values. Efforts to develop the values of democracy and thought, with the capacity of individuals to build stability within the totality of values that the Stability Pact is intended to bring to the region.
