After losing the battle with Nano at the congress, although only a few days have passed since the day the socialists’ congress came to a close, a rapid decline is being observed in the support that Prime Minister Majko had from foreign players before the congress. Thus, following the more or less “diplomatic” reaction of the American ambassador, who declared that “the USA do not support particular individuals,” it was the turn of Italy’s chief representative in Albania—a country that has historically played the role of Albania’s guardian—to contact Nano before all the congress election procedures had even been completed. Immediately after him, it was the French ambassador’s turn; he expressed his country’s support regarding political developments in Albania, taking into account the conclusions of the PS’s third congress. First, it must be said that the support given to Majko and his cabinet during the previous months had nothing to do with his abilities or with any particular sympathy. That support was mainly connected with events in Kosovo and the region. Foreigners, above all the Americans, were interested not only in a stable Albania during NATO’s offensive against Milošević’s Yugoslavia, but preferred to have political partners who understood only the word “yes.” This is precisely what led Majko to remain in office, believing that the support for the government he headed was the result of his own abilities and those of the team he led. However, the international community, which is interested in Albania and our region, cannot rely on individuals who do not have the backing of a considerable portion of the electorate—that is, who are not an important force in the life of the country—but rather on those politicians who enjoy popularity and have influence in the country.
