. That Majko would resign was something expected ever since the morning of 10 October, when the count of the Socialist delegates' votes declared him the loser. Perhaps the young politician, whom the events of 14 September a year earlier had catapulted to the head of government, had planned to resist to the end. Perhaps he thought he was the only solution for the country's circumstances, but also hoped that his circumstantial “friends” would support him against Nano and move heaven and earth to keep him at the head of government, with the aim of leaving no room for manoeuvre to party chairman Nano. Majko may also have harboured illusions that, as opposition pressure against Nano increased, Nano would dare take some step to begin a confidence-vote procedure that would lead to his dismissal. But everything concerning these matters unfolded in the opposite direction. Some of Majko's ministers and associates, thanks to their experience, sensed that the cabinet they belonged to had only a few days left, so they set about preparing their resignations, which began to be submitted two days ago. This was the alarm bell that woke Majko and forced him to follow his ministers' example, even though he had just returned from a visit to Sofia. And after that came the second disappointment, the greatest one for Majko. When the news was announced that he would submit his resignation to President Meidani, no one showed any surprise or opposition. Everyone reacted as if they had been waiting for such a move from the Prime Minister for some time. Thus, the Presidency made it known that the President would accept the resignation, while the new secretary-general of the S.P., Dokle, called for an urgent meeting of the party leadership and the KPD to begin the procedure for choosing the person who would be asked to take the mandate to form a new government, adding that “Majko's resignation serves to preserve the country's stability.” As for the opposition, from a propaganda standpoint this will make noise about the fall of the “Eurosocialist” government, sounding the alarm about the possible return of the “Enverist” current. But in substantive political terms, Majko's resignation widened its room for manoeuvre. At the very least, the opposition will once again put the “broad-based government” card on the table. This would not only put Nano's sincerity about dialogue and outreach to civil society to the test, but is also seen as an important step towards early elections.

Inspection by the ministry of the Tirana Police Commissioner After numerous requests, which Majko had agreed to, to dismiss Mithat Havari, director of the Tirana police, Poçi has decided to take the most effective route. Yesterday he sent an inspection team from the ministry, led by Deputy Minister Yzeiri himself, to find faults at the capital's police station and remove him once and for all. Judging from the detailed inspection carried out yesterday, there seems to be a strong desire to find faults in the Tirana police. And how could it be otherwise, given that Havari has been the only “tough nut to crack” for Poçi, with the support of Prime Minister Majko.
