Their dangerousness must have compelled Albania’s Prime Minister, Ilir Meta, at a meeting held two days ago with a delegation from Kosovo’s National Unity Party, to express Albania’s firm distancing from possible adventurist actions and to call on Albanians in Preshevë, Bujanovc and Medvegjë to show restraint and calm, so as to guard against any provocation aimed at creating tension and destabilizing the situation there. The Albanian prime minister’s concern comes after the serious events in Mitrovicë and several worrying developments in Medvegjë, Bujanovc and Preshevë, or, as it is known, Eastern Kosovo, which is under Serbia’s control. These developments in a negative direction are taking place at a time when Serbia and the states backing it are trying to neutralize the results of NATO and UN intervention and presence in Kosovo; Serbia’s strategy seeks to achieve this in two ways: first, by creating turmoil and tension inside the part of Kosovo controlled by NATO, and second, by provoking an armed conflict in Eastern Kosovo, in Medvegjë, Bujanovc and Preshevë. It is regrettable that various Albanian radical groups, under the banner of super-patriotism, are trying to create conflicts in Eastern Kosovo, which would result in the massacre of Albanians there, as well as the ethnic cleansing of Eastern Kosovo by the army and police. The posturing or super-patriotism that some Albanian radical groups are trying to peddle after NATO’s war in Kosovo is not only out of date, but also extremely harmful to the national interests of Kosovo and the entire Albanian nation. Albania’s Prime Minister, I. Meta, and the government he leads, at the right time and rightly expressed their distance from any provocative and destabilizing action that would seek to harm the common policy and interests of the Atlantic Alliance and the Albanian nation in Kosovo.
